Artist B.Kliban interview

Artist B. Kliban was a very private person. He never liked being photographed or doing interviews and he loved how he could go out in public without being recognized. He only granted three interviews during his career; "The New York Times" magazine, "Rolling Stone" magazine and only one recorded interview. Stephen Banker was an on-air columnist and reporter for Canadian Broadcasting Corp and a correspondent for CBS TV. When he asked B. Kliban for an interview, Kliban declined. Knowing that Kliban was a huge fan of cartoonist Saul Steinberg who worked for the "New Yorker" magazine, Banker offered the rare taped interview he had done with Steinberg in exchange for an interview with him. It was an offer Kliban couldn't refuse. You have a chance to hear his voice in this very candid interview!

Jean-Jacques Sempé, the artist behind this week’s “Different Scales,” finds inspiration in music, especially jazz.“Cartoons are like jazz: their goal is only to suggest,” he adds.“I know it runs counter to everything else these days, where the mandate is to inflate the slightest thing, but in my drawings I strive for the beauty of ellipsis that I find in Debussy or in Count Basie.”
